Funchal's Art Deco market hall overflows with tropical fruit, flowers, and fresh fish across two tiled floors. Entry is free, the fruit tastings from vendors are generous, and the building's azulejo panels are beautiful in their own right.
Wicker toboggans steered by white-clad carreiros slide downhill on greased runners from Monte village toward Funchal. It is paid and touristy but genuinely unique, a relic of 19th-century Madeiran transport that exists nowhere else on earth.
