The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Fener neighborhood is the spiritual headquarters of Orthodox Christianity worldwide. Free to enter. The church is modest in size but its religious significance is immense. Budget travelers visit for free and stand in the church that has been the center of Orthodox Christianity since the 4th century, surviving Ottoman conquest, Greek-Turkish tensions, and 1,700 years of history.
