Dolmabahce Palace
Dolmabahce Palace is the 19th-century Ottoman palace on the Bosphorus waterfront, built to rival the palaces of Europe. Entry is paid. The ornate interior, the crystal staircase, and the 4.5-ton chandelier in the ceremonial hall are the highlights. Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, died here in 1938. Budget travelers who visit one paid interior in Istanbul often choose between Topkapi and Dolmabahce. The waterfront gardens are visible for free from the road.
