Derinkuyu is an ancient multi-level underground city in Cappadocia, reaching 60 meters deep with rooms for 20,000 people, ventilation shafts, a church, a school, and rolling stone doors. Entry is paid at a modest price. The city was used as a refuge from invaders for centuries. Budget travelers take the cheap dolmus from Goreme (30 minutes), descend into the earth, and walk through one of the most extraordinary human-made underground spaces in the world.
