One of the oldest surviving corrales (open-air courtyard theatres) in Europe, dating to 1601 and still in use. This is the real Spanish Golden Age stage type, the kind where the plays of Lope de Vega and Calderon were first performed. The original structure sat hidden inside a later theatre and cinema until it was rediscovered in the 1980s and restored, so the galleries and stage on the guided tour are the genuine early layout, not a replica.
It stands a few steps off Plaza de Cervantes in Alcala de Henares, the birthplace of Cervantes and an easy budget day trip from Madrid on the cheap Cercanías regional train. Entry is free, and the regional train from Madrid puts it within easy reach, which makes it one of the cheapest serious Roman sites in central Spain.
