Brunate
Brunate is a hilltop village above Como reached by a funicular (cheap, runs every 15-30 minutes). The village has a lighthouse viewpoint (free) with panoramic views over the lake, the Alps, and on clear days, the Milan skyline.

The Como lakefront promenade runs along the southern tip of Lake Como with views across the lake to the mountains. Free. The Tempio Voltiano (museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery) is paid but the lakefront parks and paths are free. Budget travelers walk from the cathedral to the lakefront, sit on the benches, and take in one of the most famous lake views in the world.
