Castle in Naples

Castel Nuovo

Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) is a 13th-century castle on the waterfront between the port and Piazza del Plebiscito, with a triumphal arch entrance carved in white marble. The courtyard is free. The museum and chapel are paid at a modest price. The castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Naples and visible from the ferries arriving from Capri and Ischia. Budget travelers walk through the free courtyard and photograph the triumphal arch, one of the finest examples of Renaissance sculpture in southern Italy.
