Vik

Vik is the only real service stop for roughly 70 kilometers in either direction on the south coast, which makes it a free Ring Road staging post even if you do not pay to sleep there: pull in, refuel, restock at the single grocery store, and push on. The headline sights cost nothing, since both the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and the basalt Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks offshore are open coastline you simply walk up to (mind the sneaker waves, which are genuinely deadly here). To sleep cheap, skip the guesthouse cluster in the village and look for hostels or campsites, and note that Vik sits about 180 kilometers from Reykjavik, close enough to anchor a budget day loop out of the capital across south Iceland. Bring your own food where you can, because remote-village prices are steep and the nearest alternative is a long drive away.
