Wandering Vicenza’s historic center costs nothing: the grand Piazza dei Signori with the Basilica Palladiana, the streets lined with Palladio’s palaces, and the long Corso Palladio are all free to walk. The Teatro Olimpico (the world’s oldest surviving enclosed theater) and the countryside villas are paid sights worth budgeting for, but the city reads as an open-air architecture lesson on foot alone. Budget travelers stop here between Venice and Verona on the same train line, where rooms run cheaper than either.
