Sighisoara is one of the cheapest highlights on the Transylvanian heritage route, because the thing you came to see costs nothing: wandering the cobbled, walled citadel, one of the last inhabited medieval citadels in Europe and a UNESCO site, is completely free. Climbing the covered wooden Scholars’ Stairs to the Church on the Hill is free too, so the only real expense is the bed you sleep in and whatever you eat. As a small Saxon hilltop town it works well as a budget day trip or a cheap one-night stop between Brasov and Cluj, where Romanian prices keep food and lodging gentle. Time your visit for daytime, walk the full circuit of the walls in twenty minutes, and you have seen the best of it without paying an entry fee.

The 14th-century clock tower guards the entrance to the citadel and houses a small history museum with views from the top. It is the symbol of Sighisoara and the natural starting point for exploring the UNESCO-listed medieval center.
One of the best-preserved inhabited medieval citadels in Europe, with cobbled streets, guild towers, and painted houses. Walking the citadel is completely free, and the fact that people still live and work inside the walls gives it an authenticity that museum towns cannot match.
The yellow house where Vlad III (the inspiration for Dracula) was born in 1431 sits on a quiet citadel square. The exterior and commemorative plaque are free to see, and the building now houses a restaurant, making it easy to combine history with lunch.
