Santa Cruz de Tenerife

3 things to see

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the Canary Islands’ co-capital, and a lot of the best of it is free. The public beaches cost nothing, the palm-lined plazas and waterfront are free to wander, and Mount Teide National Park, home to Spain’s highest peak, charges no entry fee. The carnival, one of the largest anywhere, fills the streets for free each winter. Canarian food prices run well below mainland Spain, so eating out stays cheap. Las Palmas on neighboring Gran Canaria offers a similar island experience.
