Rovaniemi sits right on the Arctic Circle, offering free Northern Lights viewing in winter and midnight sun in summer, though accommodation prices require advance planning. The aurora and the surrounding forest trails and riverside cost nothing once you are there, so the real budget lever is booking beds early and reaching town by the cheap overnight train from Helsinki. Jatkankynttila Bridge
