Town in Slovenia

Ptuj

3 things to see

Slovenia’s oldest town is crowned by a hilltop castle and famous for Kurentovanje, a wild pre-Lenten carnival with sheepskin-clad figures chasing away winter. The compact historic core is free to wander in an afternoon with almost no tourist markup, and the climb to the castle grounds for views over the red roofs costs nothing. Ancient wine cellars offer tastings at honest Slovenian prices, and nearby Maribor makes an easy, cheap base or day trip.
