Slovenia’s oldest town is crowned by a hilltop castle and famous for Kurentovanje, a wild pre-Lenten carnival with sheepskin-clad figures chasing away winter. The compact historic core is free to wander in an afternoon with almost no tourist markup, and the climb to the castle grounds for views over the red roofs costs nothing. Ptuj Castle
A hilltop castle housing a regional museum with collections spanning Roman artifacts to traditional Kurent carnival masks. Entry is affordable and the terrace views over the Drava river are excellent.
Ptuj Wine Cellar
One of the oldest wine cellars in Slovenia, storing wines dating back to 1917. Tastings are inexpensive, and the atmospheric vaulted cellars beneath the old town are part of the experience.
