A working Algarve city behind the dramatic beach cliffs of Praia da Rocha, where budget travelers base themselves to avoid the markup of resort towns further east. Walking the cliff paths and the sand at Praia da Rocha costs nothing, and the annual summer sardine festival is a cheap way to eat well by the water. Off-season rates drop sharply on even waterfront apartments, so travel in spring or autumn. Lagos and Faro are short, cheap hops along the coast for day trips.
