Ponta Delgada

16 things to see14 of them free

The capital of the Azores on Sao Miguel island, gateway to volcanic crater lakes, hot springs, and the twin-colored Sete Cidades lagoon. Budget airlines from mainland Europe make the Azores increasingly accessible, and most flights route through Lisbon, so the city pairs well with a few days on the mainland.

The good news for a budget trip: once you land, the island is cheap. Ponta Delgada’s compact historic center is walkable and free to explore, from the triple-arched waterfront gates of Portas da Cidade to the shaded public garden at Campo de Sao Francisco. The star sight, the blue-and-green crater lake of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, is free to reach from rim viewpoints like Vista do Rei. The main thing worth paying for is the hot-spring pool at Caldeira Velha, which charges a small entry fee. Getting to the Azores is the real cost; the islands themselves are not.
