Budget travelers stay here instead of Naples or Sorrento to be walking distance from one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, skipping the daily train fares those bases add up to. The town’s own streets and the modern basilica cost nothing, and the Circumvesuviana train links it cheaply to Naples and the wider Bay of Naples. Spring and autumn bring milder weather for walking the open ruins, where summer heat and crowds are harshest.
