The “City of Three Rivers” where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet at the Austrian border, 1.5 hours north of Salzburg. The baroque old town on a narrow peninsula, St Stephen’s Cathedral (with one of the world’s largest church organs), and the hilltop Veste Oberhaus fortress make it one of the most beautiful small cities in Bavaria. Wandering the peninsula and walking out to the point where the three rivers meet costs nothing, and the cathedral is free to enter outside organ-concert times. It pairs naturally with Regensburg downriver or Linz across the border for a budget Danube loop.

Passau Old Town
A narrow Italian-influenced old town squeezed onto the peninsula between two rivers. Walking the lanes from the Residenzplatz to the cathedral costs nothing and captures the city's character.
Veste Oberhaus
A 13th-century hilltop fortress above the Danube with sweeping views over the three-river confluence. The walk up is free and the panorama from the ramparts is the best viewpoint in Passau.
