A picture-perfect walled medieval town where you sip ginjinha cherry liqueur from a chocolate cup and browse bookshops tucked into converted churches. Wandering the whitewashed lanes and walking the town walls cost nothing, and the views over the surrounding plain are the best free thing here. Obidos is an easy day trip from Lisbon, but staying overnight after the day-trippers leave reveals a quieter and cheaper side of this storybook village. Spring and autumn bring mild walking weather and lower rates than the summer crowds.

Obidos Castle Walls Walk
A walkable circuit along the top of the medieval walls enclosing the entire town, with no guardrails and sweeping views over terracotta rooftops and the surrounding countryside. Completely free.
Porta da Vila
The main gateway into the walled town, with an 18th-century tile-covered oratory inside the entrance passage. Free to walk through and a memorable first impression of the town.
