Newcastle is a strong budget city because its headline sights cost nothing. The Quayside riverside walk along the Tyne is free, crossing the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge to the south bank is free, and the BALTIC contemporary art gallery in the old flour mill opposite charges no general admission. Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North, just south of the city, is free to stand beneath, and you can wander Grainger Town and Grey Street, one of the best preserved Georgian centres in the UK, for the price of your shoe leather. Trains run easily down the East Coast Main Line, so pair Newcastle with a budget stop in York or push north to Edinburgh.

Grainger Town
A grid of elegant neoclassical streets designed by Richard Grainger in the 1830s, anchored by Grey Street and the Grainger Market. The architecture and covered market are free to explore.
Quayside
The regenerated riverside stretch along the Tyne with views of seven bridges, including the iconic Tyne Bridge and the tilting Millennium Bridge. Walking the full quayside loop between both banks costs nothing.
Tyne Bridge
The 1928 arch bridge that became the symbol of Newcastle, connecting the city to Gateshead across the Tyne. Best viewed for free from the Quayside below or from the Millennium Bridge downstream.
