Lublin is an underrated eastern Polish city with a Renaissance old town, a hilltop castle, and prices that are low even by Polish standards. The old town and the streets around the castle are free to wander, and eating out here costs noticeably less than in the bigger tourist cities. It makes a cheap detour east of Warsaw, well off the Krakow tourist trail.

A neo-Gothic castle housing a museum with an outstanding collection of Polish paintings and the 14th-century Holy Trinity Chapel covered in Byzantine-Ruthenian frescoes. Admission is very affordable and the chapel frescoes alone are worth the visit.
A beautifully preserved Renaissance and baroque old town entered through the 14th-century Krakow Gate. Free to explore with remarkably low cafe prices and colourful tenement houses lining every lane.
A former Nazi concentration and extermination camp preserved as a memorial and museum on the outskirts of the city. Admission is free, and it is one of the most important and sobering Holocaust memorial sites in Europe.
