Leon rewards budget travelers because the headline sights cost little or nothing. The Basilica de San Isidoro is free to enter, with its Romanesque architecture on full display, though the famous frescoes called the “Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art” sit in the attached Royal Pantheon and museum, which carry a modest ticket. The bigger trick is the Barrio Humedo, where ordering a drink still earns you a free tapa, so a couple of cheap glasses can stand in for a whole meal. Wander the medieval streets to admire the Gothic cathedral’s famous stained glass from outside and Casa Botines, one of only three Gaudi buildings beyond Catalonia, both free to take in from the plazas. Come in May or late September for thinner crowds and softer prices, and pair the city with a cheap regional bus or train hop to Burgos or Oviedo along the Camino corridor.
