Koper is Slovenia’s main port, and its Venetian-influenced old town is free to wander, with the cathedral square and the medieval lanes around it costing nothing. Public swimming spots line the coast for a free dip in summer, and it lands as a more affordable base than the prettier but pricier Piran just down the coast. Good rail and bus links make it easy to pair with Trieste across the Italian border. Shoulder season is quieter and cheaper than the July and August coastal rush.

Koper Waterfront
A seaside promenade stretching along the harbour with views to Trieste across the Gulf of Trieste. Free to walk with spots for swimming off the rocks and a far quieter atmosphere than nearby Piran or Portoroz.
Praetorian Palace
A striking Venetian Gothic palace dominating one side of Titov Trg, with a battlemented facade and a ground-floor loggia. Free to admire from outside, and the tourist information centre inside gives access to the main hall.
Titov Trg
The main square of Koper's Venetian-era old town, surrounded by the Praetorian Palace, cathedral, city tower, and loggia. Free to enjoy and one of the most harmonious medieval squares on the Slovenian coast.
