Katowice is a post-industrial Silesian city reinventing itself with music venues, modern architecture, and some of the cheapest prices in urban Poland. The market square and the redeveloped Strefa Kultury district, where the Spodek arena and a striking concert hall sit on former mine land, cost nothing to walk through. Frequent cheap trains link it to Krakow and Wroclaw, making it an easy budget base in southern Poland.

A flying-saucer-shaped arena from the 1970s that has become an icon of Polish modernist architecture. Free to admire from outside, and its surrounding culture zone includes the equally striking NOSPR concert hall by Konior Studio.
