The two best things in Jurmala are free: the wide white-sand beach on the Gulf of Riga and the streets of ornate wooden Art Nouveau villas you can wander for hours without spending a cent. Get here on the cheap commuter train from Riga in about 30 minutes and get off at Majori, the de facto center and the head of the Jomas iela pedestrian spine. On the western edge, Kemeri National Park protects bogs and sulfur springs with free boardwalk trails, so a full day of beach plus forest costs little more than the fare. Come in late spring or September shoulder season when the sand is nearly empty, lodging across Latvia drops, and the pine air is at its best, though the water only warms enough to swim from late June to August.

Jomas Street
The main pedestrian street running through the heart of Jurmala's Majori district, lined with wooden Art Nouveau villas, cafes, and small shops. Free to stroll and the best place to see the town's distinctive timber architecture.
Jurmala Beach
A wide, white-sand beach stretching over 30 kilometres along the Gulf of Riga. Free access everywhere, with the Majori and Dzintari sections being the most popular and easiest to reach by train from Riga.
