Gyumri is Armenia’s second city, rebuilt after the devastating 1988 earthquake, and budget travelers find it even cheaper than Yerevan with a rawer, more local feel. The 19th-century black stone streets of the Kumayri historic district are free to wander, and Armenia overall is one of the most affordable countries in the region for food and lodging. It connects to Yerevan by a cheap train or marshrutka, making it an easy and inexpensive overnight from the capital. Late spring and early autumn dodge the harsh continental winters here.
