Switzerland is expensive, so budget travelers should cook their own food, ride the free network of marked hiking trails rather than the lifts, and consider basing in nearby Interlaken where rooms run cheaper. Shoulder months like June and September bring fewer crowds and lower lodging prices while the high trails are still open.

First Cliff Walk
A cantilevered steel walkway extending over a cliff edge at 2,168 metres with views of the Eiger and surrounding glaciers. Free once you reach the First summit station (cable car ticket required for access).
Gletscherschlucht
A narrow glacier gorge carved by meltwater from the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, accessible via a walkway cut into the rock walls. A small entry fee, but one of the most dramatic natural features in the Bernese Oberland.
