City in Moldova

Chisinau

Also known as Chișinău, Kishinev

4 things to see

Chișinău may be the cheapest capital in Europe, and the best part costs nothing: the ceremonial core is a walkable cluster of free sights, with the Triumphal Arch, the Nativity Cathedral, and the leafy paths of Stephen the Great Park all a few minutes apart in the center. Stretch the free day out across the city’s green spaces, from the Valley of the Mills to the sprawling Botanical Garden, then spend the little money you do need on cheap, hearty Moldovan food and the famously affordable local wine. The wine cellars at Cricova and Mileștii Mici sit within an hour and make a low-cost day out, and cross-border buses to nearby Tiraspol, Iasi, and Odesa keep onward travel friendly to a tight budget. Aim for late spring or early autumn shoulder season, when the weather is mild, the wine harvest energy is in the air, and rooms cost less than the summer peak.
