The cathedral square is free to wander, the old town and seafront cost nothing to explore, and the fishing harbor still supplies the trattorias with the day’s catch at prices that reflect a working Sicilian town. Outside July and August accommodation prices drop sharply, making shoulder season the smart window. It pairs easily with Palermo, an hour west by regional train.

Cefalu Cathedral
A Norman cathedral famous for its golden Christ Pantocrator mosaic, one of the finest Byzantine mosaics in Sicily. Entry to the cathedral is free, with a small charge for the cloister.
La Rocca di Cefalu
The dramatic limestone crag behind the town, topped by the ruins of a Norman castle and a megalithic temple. The steep hike up is free and rewards with a sweeping view over the rooftops and coast.
