City in Spain

Cartagena

5 things to see

A Mediterranean port city in Murcia with a Roman theater discovered in 1988, a modernist quarter, and a naval history stretching back to Hannibal. The compact historic center is free to wander, with Art Nouveau facades along Calle Mayor and harbour-front promenades that cost nothing. It pairs easily with the city of Murcia inland and the beaches around Alicante up the coast, both reachable by cheap regional transport. Spring and autumn are warm and far cheaper than the high-summer beach season.
