Bruges packs a UNESCO-listed medieval old town into a walkable core, and the single best thing here costs nothing: wandering the canals and cobblestone lanes on foot. Start free in the Markt and the quieter Burg square, photograph the canal bend at Rozenhoedkaai, then escape the crowds in the Begijnhof courtyard and Minnewater Park, both free to enter. The Basilica of the Holy Blood lets you step into the main nave for free, and a stroll along the old city ramparts brings you past the surviving windmills with no ticket needed. Tourist-zone restaurants near the Markt run pricey, so eat a few streets back where locals do, and grab Belgian fries from a stand rather than a sit-down place. Bruges sits about an hour by train from Brussels and roughly half an hour from Ghent, so a base in either city turns it into a cheap day trip; buying point-to-point one-way tickets usually beats a return. Spring and autumn shoulder months bring smaller crowds and lower room rates than the summer peak.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a small church on the Burg square with two chapels: a Romanesque lower chapel and a Gothic upper chapel that houses a relic believed to contain a cloth with the blood of Christ. Free to enter.
The Bruges Beer Museum on the Markt Square is an interactive museum covering the history of Belgian beer. Entry is paid and includes tastings.
Bruges is defined by its canals, and walking along them is free, beautiful, and the single best way to see the city. The route from the Rozenhoedkaai (the most photographed corner in Belgium) along the Dijver and around the Minnewater (Lake of Love) takes about an hour.
The Burg is the civic and religious heart of Bruges, a smaller and more intimate square than the Markt. The Town Hall (one of the oldest in the Low Countries), the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the ornate facade of the Old Civil Registry face the square.
The Church of Our Lady has the tallest brick tower in the world (115.5 meters) and houses Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy during his lifetime. The nave is free to enter.
De Halve Maan is Bruges's only remaining active city-center brewery, producing Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik beers since 1856. Tours are paid at a modest price and include a tasting on the rooftop terrace with views over the old town.
A 15th-century palace next to the Church of Our Lady, now a museum of Bruges daily life from medieval times to the 19th century. The building itself is the highlight, including a private oratory overlooking the church nave.
The Markt is the medieval central square of Bruges, surrounded by guild houses, restaurants, and the 83-meter Belfry tower. Free to enjoy.
Minnewater Park surrounds the Lake of Love at the southern edge of Bruges's historic center. Free.
Sint-Janshuis Windmill is one of four remaining windmills on the grassy ramparts along the northeast edge of Bruges's old town, the only one still in its original location and still grinding grain. Entry is a small fee (open seasonally).
A small stone bridge behind the Church of Our Lady often called the most romantic spot in Bruges, offering a classic canal view framed by medieval buildings and weeping willows. Free to cross and photograph at any time.
One of Europe's oldest surviving hospital buildings, operating from the 12th to the 19th century, now housing a museum with six masterpieces by Hans Memling. The medieval wards and pharmacy are as compelling as the paintings.
