Remote northeastern fortress town near the Spanish border, home to the Domus Municipalis, the only surviving Romanesque civic building on the Iberian Peninsula. Budget travelers find some of Portugal’s lowest prices here, with hearty Transmontana cuisine served in local tascas for a few euros. The walled citadel and its ramparts are free to walk, and the surrounding Montesinho hills cost nothing to hike. The Spanish town of Zamora lies just over the border for those continuing into Castile.
