Blois

3 things to see

Blois sits at the heart of the Loire Valley with a royal castle whose staircase is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, and it serves as the closest base for visiting Chambord. Staying here costs significantly less than Tours while putting the valley’s greatest chateaux within easy cycling or bus distance. The old town climbing up from the river is free to wander, and the Loire cycle paths cost nothing once you have a bike. Shoulder seasons in spring and autumn bring lower room rates and thinner chateau queues than the summer peak.
