Austro-Hungarian architecture lines the boulevards of this western Romanian city, which serves as a natural gateway into Transylvania on cheap trains running directly from Budapest. Prices are among the lowest in the EU, and the grand Habsburg-era theater and riverside promenade feel like a miniature Vienna at a tenth of the cost. The boulevards and the green riverbank are free to stroll, and nearby Timisoara makes an easy low-cost day trip for more of the same Banat grandeur.

Palace of Culture Arad
