Alesund hands you its best attraction for free: the whole Art Nouveau town center is an open-air walk through one of Europe’s most consistent Jugendstil streetscapes, all rebuilt in the same short window after the 1904 fire. The other signature view costs nothing but effort, since the Fjellstua panorama over the harbor and islands is reached on foot by climbing the 418 steps up Aksla hill from the town park. As an active fishing port it stays grounded and walkable, and it works as the budget gateway to Geirangerfjord and the Sunnmore Alps without a tour bus. Reach it cheaply by flying into the local airport, which links to Bergen and Trondheim, and aim for late spring or early autumn shoulder season when daylight is long but lodging is easier on the wallet.
