Alba Iulia

3 things to see

Alba Iulia, in Transylvania, has one of the most impressive star-shaped fortresses in Romania, beautifully restored and completely free to walk through. The Alba Carolina Citadel and its surrounding old town make for an easy half-day that costs nothing beyond getting there. It slots neatly into a Transylvania route between Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca, and the citadel is at its quietest outside the summer crowds.
